In the NFL, 40-year-old cornerbacks are kind of like unicorns — they are not supposed to exist. But Terence Newman is no ordinary cornerback.
On Monday, the Minnesota Vikings announced that 39-year-old Newman re-signed and will return for his 16th NFL season in 2018.
Newman will celebrate his 40th birthday just before the season starts — September 4 — and the two-time Pro Bowler will be the oldest defensive player in the league.
The former Dallas Cowboys and Cincinnati Bengals CB ranks second among active players with 42 career interceptions.
He is also prized for his leadership and experience. The veteran should be a good mentor for new Vikings cornerback Mike Hughes, the team's first-round pick out of UCF (number 30 overall) in last week's draft.
Newman himself was once a first-round pick, the Cowboys' fifth overall selection in 2003.
He later played three seasons with the Bengals before heading north to Minnesota.
Newman noted during training camp last season that he had pondered retirement the last several offseasons, but when it is time, he does not want to make it a big deal.
"I'm in the sunset when I go. … It's not going to be a big spectacle," Newman said via Scout.com. "It's just going to be I'm gone. I don't need any pats on the back. When I'm done, I'm done."
In three seasons with the Vikings, Newman has started 33 of the 47 games in which he has appeared. In 2017, he had 25 tackles and one interception.
