Beathard backup as Mullens starts against Raiders

November 1 2018 11:05 PM

Nick Mullens, the San Francisco 49ers' third-string quarterback, will start against the Oakland Raiders on Thursday, the team have confirmed.

CJ Beathard continues to deal with a sprained wrist suffered in the 49ers' 18-15 loss to the Arizona Cardinals in Week 8, meaning Mullens will get his chance against neighbours Oakland.

Mullens was an undrafted free agent out of Southern Mississippi and has never appeared in a regular-season NFL game.

Beathard's injury, which is causing him to struggle to grip a football, is the latest blow to a San Francisco team wrecked by injury in 2018.

The 24-year-old was inserted into the starting lineup after Jimmy Garoppolo tore his anterior cruciate ligament in late September.

Beathard, who will serve as backup on Thursday, has completed 60.4 percent of his passes and thrown eight touchdowns, along with seven interceptions, in six games this season.
