July 7 2020 11:15 AM

Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes has been rewarded for his sensational start in the NFL with a 10-year contract extension that will net him a fortune.

The 24-year-old reigning Super Bowl MVP will cash in for a reported $503million having landed the richest deal in NFL history.

But is he really worth the big bucks?

Data from Stats Perform points to Mahomes being a generational talent, whose performance over the early years of his career point the way to greatness.

Here is a look in numbers at how Mahomes compares to the best in the game.

1 - Mahomes has played just 31 games in the NFL but compared to all others at that stage he is a number one standout. In the all-time standings at the 31-game stage of careers, he leads the way in terms of touchdown passes (76), passing yards (9,412), passer rating for those with a minimum 500 attempted passes (108.9) and games where he has had four-plus touchdown passes (8).

2 - He ranks second at the 31-game stage in completed passes (724), touchdown-to-interception ratio (4.22) and games where he has passed for 300-plus yards (17).

110.0 - Across the 2018 and 2019 seasons, Mahomes had a passer rating of 110.0, with the only quarterbacks in any two-year span to post a higher mark from a minimum 750 attempts being Drew Brees, Aaron Rodgers and Peyton Manning.

50 - Mahomes passed for 50 touchdowns in 2018, becoming just the third player to do so in a season, after Manning and Tom Brady.

12 - Mahomes also passed for 10 touchdowns and rushed for two TDs in last season's playoffs, with that total of 12 being the highest achieved by any player in an NFL postseason.

3 - He became the third youngest Super Bowl MVP (after Marcus Allen and Lynn Swann), and the youngest QB to take the award.

4 - When Mahomes hits a hot streak, the opposition had better be wary. He is the only player to have twice passed for four touchdowns in a single quarter, having become just the second to inflict such damage in a postseason game when he led the Chiefs to a stunning comeback win against the Houston Texans in last season's AFC divisional round.

32.0 - In the all-time list, Mahomes sits top for starting quarterbacks (minimum five starts) when it comes to team points per game. When Mahomes starts, the Chiefs have averaged 32 points, putting Mahomes ahead of Lamar Jackson (30.9), Bob Waterfield (29.4), Jimmy Garoppolo (28.8) and Brady (28.1).
