D-backs make OF Yasmany Tomas one very expensive minor-leaguer

March 26 2018 2:15 PM

Diamondbacks outfielder Yasmany Tomas, who signed a six-year, $68 million contract in 2014, was demoted Sunday to Triple-A Reno.

Tomas, 27, couldn't make the big club out of spring training even with fellow outfielder Steven Souza Jr. sidelined for as much as the season's first two weeks.

Despite batting .293 with a .370 on-base percentage this spring, Tomas apparently didn't show enough to break into an Arizona outfield picture that includes David Peralta, A.J. Pollock, Jarrod Dyson, Chris Owings and Daniel Descalso.

“We outlined some thoughts for Yasmany. He had a great camp offensively, and defensively we’re still trying to piece together his game. We talked about with him that he needs to work on his defense,” manager Torey Lovullo said (via azcentral.com). “We want it to improve to the level where he’s going to be an above-average defender, and that was laid out to him.”

A native of Cuba, Tomas has experienced an up-and-down three seasons in the majors, topped in 2016 when he hit 31 homers but marred by a 2017 in which injuries limited  him to only 47 games. He was arrested on reckless driving charges this offseason, further complicating the organization's view on him.

He is still due $46 million over the course of the next three seasons, including a $17 million salary in 2020, a contract that makes him essentially untradeable. So for now, the Diamondbacks are stuck, and Tomas is headed to Triple-A.
