Colon loses perfect game in eighth inning

April 16 2018 5:21 AM

Texas Rangers starting pitcher Bartolo Colon carried a perfect game into the eighth inning against the Houston Astros on Sunday.

The veteran hurler was throwing some of the best pitches of his career against the defending champions, but he ran into some trouble in the eighth inning when he walked Carlos Correa to start the inning, and then gave up a double to Josh Reddick and a sacrifice fly to Yuli Gurriel.

Colon, 44, would have become the oldest MLB pitcher to throw a no-hitter. Nolan Ryan was also 44 when he threw a no-hitter, but over 150 days younger. Randy Johnson, 40, is the oldest to throw a perfect game.

In a true pitchers' duel, Astros ace Justin Verlander had allowed just one run off one hit with 11 strikeouts through eight innings.

Colon finished the game with a line of 7.2 innings pitched, seven strikeouts, one hit, one walk and one earned run.
