Stanton, Judge lift Yankees to victory over Red Sox

May 9 2018 8:42 AM

Giancarlo Stanton and Aaron Judge provided the New York Yankees with all the runs they needed in a 3-2 victory over MLB rivals the Boston Red Sox.

Stanton blasted two home runs and Judge added a late RBI as New York triumphed in the series opener at Yankee Stadium on Tuesday.

All-Star slugger Stanton put the Yankees ahead early when he blasted a pitch from Boston starter Drew Pomeranz over the left field fence in the second inning.

He pushed New York's advantage to 2-0 with another solo shot in the fourth.

Boston (25-10) plated a run in the fifth and tied the score on a Mookie Betts triple two innings later. But, in the bottom of the seventh, Judge singled home a run to give the Yankees the lead for good.

Yankees starter Luis Severino allowed two runs and six hits while striking out 11 in six innings pitched. Aroldis Chapman picked up his eighth save of the season to secure the victory.

The Yankees (25-10) have now won seven in a row and 16 of their last 17.

PAXTON POSTS NO-HITTER

Seattle Mariners pitcher James Paxton delivered the best start of his career against the Toronto Blue Jays. He threw the second individual no-hitter of the season, striking out seven and walking three as Seattle blanked Toronto 5-0.

Aaron Nola struck out 12 and allowed just one run in seven innings to lead the Philadelphia Phillies to a 4-2 win over the San Francisco Giants.

ROYALS CRUSH BUNDY

Baltimore Orioles pitcher Dylan Bundy surrendered four home runs in the first inning of a 15-7 loss to the Kansas City Royals. He failed to record an out, threw 28 pitches, only 13 of which were for strikes, and allowed seven earned runs. Kansas City went on to plate three more runs in the inning.

New York Mets reliever Hansel Robles allowed two runs and recorded just one out in a 7-2 defeat against the Cincinnati Reds, inflating his ERA to 5.23 in 2018.

WHAT A CATCH!

Talk about reflexes. Washington Nationals pitcher Wander Suero somehow caught a fizzing shot that was bound to hit his head at the bottom of the ninth inning against the San Diego Padres.

MARINERS AT BLUE JAYS

The Blue Jays will look to rebound after they failed to pick up a hit on Tuesday. They have lost four of their last five. Meanwhile, the Mariners can pick up a series victory and move to seven games over .500 with a win. Wade LeBlanc, who has registered a 3.57 ERA in 17 2/3 innings pitched this season will start for Seattle while Jaime Garcia will take the mound for Toronto. Garcia pitched 3.3 innings and surrendered six runs in his last start against the Indians. He currently holds a 6.60 ERA in 2018.
