Mariners blank Twins to remain within shouting distance in West

May 15 2018 7:19 AM

Even without Robinson Cano, the Seattle Mariners blanked the Minnesota Twins 1-0 in MLB on Monday.

The Mariners received some bad news on Mother's Day when second baseman Cano broke his hand after getting hit by a pitch.

Cano was placed on the 10-day disabled list on Monday, and will meet with a specialist on Tuesday to determine if surgery is required. The Mariners could have wallowed in self pity against the Twins, but instead won 1-0.

Wade LeBlanc started for Seattle, tossing six scoreless innings with four strikeouts. He was locked in a pitchers' duel against Jake Odorizzi, who struck out seven in six scoreless innings.

Jean Segura led the Mariners offensively, recording two hits, moving his season average up to .307. Nelson Cruz drove in the game's only run, bringing Dee Gordon in to score.

While the Mariners (23-17, two games back) still have plenty of pieces to succeed in the crowded American League (AL) West, they will need more production out of Kyle Seager and Cruz in Cano's absence to remain on pace with the Astros and Angels.

GOODRUM IN FORM

Tigers outfielder Niko Goodrum is making a case for an every day starting spot. Monday, he bashed two home runs with five RBIs in a 6-3 win over the Indians. Starting in place of injured Nick Castellanos, Goodrum is now batting .257 this season.

POOR PORCELLO

Red Sox starting pitcher Rick Porcello lost his first game of the season, allowing five earned runs off nine hits in six innings, falling 6-5 to the Athletics. Despite the poor outing, Porcello is still 5-1 with a 3.28 ERA this season.

BAUTISTA STILL HAS IT

Jose Bautista helped the Braves earn a 6-5 win over the Cubs and maintain the best record in the NL (25-15).

MONDAY'S RESULTS

Atlanta Braves 6-5 Chicago Cubs
Tampa Bay Rays 2-1 Kansas City Royals
Oakland Athletics 6-5 Boston Red Sox
Detroit Tigers 6-3 Cleveland Indians
Seattle Mariners 1-0 Minnesota Twins
Milwaukee Brewers 7-2 Arizona Diamondbacks
Los Angeles Angels 2-1 Houston Astros
Colorado Rockies 6-4 San Diego Padres
San Francisco Giants 10-7 Cincinnati Reds

YANKEES AT NATIONALS

The American League and National League contenders face off in a potential World Series preview. Washington have fought through a slow start to get back on track, while the Yankees own the best record in baseball. Aaron Judge has been hot all season, and Giancarlo Stanton showed signs of life on Sunday. With plenty of star power on display, this series should be fun to watch.
