Twins seeking catcher with Castro out for season

May 17 2018 1:02 AM

The Minnesota Twins are going to be active in the trade market leading up to July's deadline, especially after they found out Jason Castro will be out for the season.

Minnesota manager Paul Molitor announced on Wednesday the All-Star catcher had surgery to repair a torn meniscus.

The initial plan for Castro's surgery was just to clean up his knee, but it wound up being more serious than initially thought.

"They decided to try to keep what he had left [of the meniscus]," Molitor told reporters, via the St. Paul Pioneer Press.

"They thought that was the best course of action for him as far as prolonging his career and productivity."

Twins chief baseball officer Derek Falvey said he expects Castro's rehabilitation to take five to six months which will put him back to 100 per cent before spring training.

In addition, Falvey said the team will look into a replacement from outside the organisation.

"More of the pursuit of what might be available across the game currently in organisations, I would say, rather than a free-agent conversation,'' Falvey said.

"But we have been prepping for the depth piece, and we are now maybe expanding that search, knowing we're going to have the chance to have somebody impact us for the full season.''
