Indians ace Kluber becomes first in AL to seven wins

May 20 2018 7:52 AM

Corey Kluber starred as the Cleveland Indians defeated reigning MLB World Series champions the Houston Astros 5-4.

The Indians ace struck out 10 Astros in seven innings on Saturday, allowing two runs on six hits.

Kluber is now 7-2 for the season, and is the first player in the American League (AL) to reach seven wins.

The two-time AL Cy Young Award winner and two-time All Star appears well on his way to eclipsing his career high of 18 wins, which he has achieved three times, including last season.

It is easy to overlook Kluber and the Indians (22-22), who are hovering around the .500 mark, when the Boston Red Sox and the New York Yankees are dominating headlines with their torrid paces, and the Astros are also playing well.

But the 32-year-old Kluber is once again putting up great stats. He led the majors last season in ERA (2.25) and WHIP (0.869), and has similar numbers (2.36 ERA, 0.843 WHIP) after his start Saturday.

He now has allowed three or fewer runs in 22 successive starts, one away from the AL record held by former Red Sox great Pedro Martinez.

CRAWFORD STARS IN GIANTS WIN

San Francisco Giants shortstop Brandon Crawford went three for five with a home run and four RBIs in a 9-4 win over the Colorado Rockies.

Los Angeles Dodgers right-hander Ross Stripling allowed only one run and four hits in six innings, striking out nine in a 4-1 victory against the Washington Nationals.

AXFORD CRUMBLES AS ATHLETICS RALLY

The Toronto Blue Jays led the Oakland Athletics 4-0 entering the eighth inning. But Blue Jays reliever John Axford gave up two hits, a walk and three earned runs in 0.3 of an inning as the A's rallied for five runs to win.

CUBS REACH MILESTONE

Ian Happ's home run in the fourth inning of Saturday's 10-0 demolition of the Cincinnati Reds brought up the Cubs' 14,000th homer in their history.
