Another Rays pitcher injured as Font expected to miss ´significant time´

June 30 2018 4:53 AM

The Tampa Bay Rays lost yet another starting pitcher to injury as Wilmer Font left Friday's 3-2 win over the Houston Astros in the sixth inning with a right lat strain.

Tampa Bay manager Kevin Cash said he expects the 28-year-old to miss "significant time".

Tampa Bay's injury problems with their rotation started before the year began. Top prospect Brent Honeywell tore his UCL in spring training and is out for the season after undergoing Tommy John surgery.

Nathan Eovaldi missed a good portion of time with an elbow injury and Chris Archer is currently on the disabled list with an abdominal strain.

This will not change the Rays' approach in upcoming games as Cash said the team will go with more of the same in their rotation, meaning they will have to get creative.

"More openers and bullpen days, yippee," Cash said.

Among other pitchers the Rays have lost this year include Jose DeLeon on the MLB squad and Anthony Banda and Yonny Chirinos in the minors.
