Cain powers Brewers past Reds in extra innings

August 31 2018 7:59 AM

The Milwaukee Brewers trumped the Cincinnati Reds 2-1 thanks to Lorenzo Cain in MLB action on Thursday.

The Brewers and Reds were stuck in a pitcher's duel before Cain stepped up to the plate with the score tied at 1-1 through 10 innings.

Cain hit the go-ahead home run to put Milwaukee up for good after a motivational speech from the Brewers' third base coach. It was Cain's 10th homer of the season.

The message from Ed Sedar was "unless you do something about it, we're going to play 18 innings." Well, Milwaukee did not need to do that as they continue their fight in the National League wildcard race.

The Brewers won the series against the Reds two games to one and now move on to face the Washington Nationals on Friday.

STANTON POSTS MILESTONE

Giancarlo Stanton reached a milestone in record time when he hit his 300th home run against the Detroit Tigers. Only four others reached the mark in fewer career games, including former New York Yankee Alex Rodriguez. The Yankees eventually lost 8-7 after a three-run rally in the ninth inning by the visitors.

In 5.3 innings of work, Justin Verlander struck out 11 batters. He pitched four shut-out innings before the Houston Astros lost 5-2 to the Los Angeles Angels.

CHAPMAN ERROR CONTRIBUTES TO OAKLAND'S LOSS

The Athletics and Mariners are facing off in a big series for both teams. They are second and third respectively in the American League wildcard race and ideally have to play mistake-free to secure wins. Unfortunately for Oakland, that was not the case. A throwing error by third baseman Matt Chapman gave Seattle enough time to bring in two runs, and take an early lead as the Mariners posted a 7-1 victory.

GRANT LIFTS CARDINALS

John Gant was unstoppable for the St Louis Cardinals. He finished the 5-0 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates with six strikeouts and a home run.

The homer came in the third inning and was one of two scored that frame to give the Cardinals a lead they would never relinquish and with the win on the hill, Gant moves to 6-5 on the season with a 3.34 ERA.

THURSDAY'S RESULTS

Milwaukee Brewers 2-1 Cincinnati Reds
Cleveland Indians 5-3 Minnesota Twins
St Louis Cardinals 5-0 Pittsburgh Pirates
Detroit Tigers 8-7 New York Yankees
Los Angeles Angels 5-2 Houston Astros
Chicago Cubs 5-4 Atlanta Braves
Boston Red Sox 9-4 Chicago White Sox
Seattle Mariners 7-1 Oakland Athletics
Arizona Diamondbacks 3-1 Los Angeles Dodgers
San Diego Padres 3-2 Colorado Rockies

DIAMONDBACKS AT DODGERS

The Diamondbacks are barely holding onto top spot in the NL West standings, and their series against the Dodgers, who are just one game back, can either help or hurt them. The Diamondbacks will have to finish the weekend strong. Zack Greinke (13-8, 2.93 ERA) will start for Arizona on Friday, while Hyun-Jin Ryu (4-1, 2.18) – who has been battling a groin injury – will be Los Angeles' starter.
