Yankees, Astros managers ejected as teams respond differently

September 1 2018 9:02 AM

Neither Houston Astros manager A.J. Hinch nor New York Yankees counterpart Aaron Boone liked the zones of their respective umpires, so they decided to share their minds and were subsequently ejected.

Boone's reaction was particularly notable as he took the time to demonstrate for home plate umpire Nic Lentz where the strike zone is located as the Yankees defeated the Detroit Tigers 7-5 in MLB on Friday.

"I just had an issue with the zone on key pitches that were missed," Boone told reporters after the game.

Hinch was also upset with the umpire in the Astros' 3-0 loss to the Los Angeles Angels and was tossed without even going onto the field.

Eric Cooper threw him out while Hinch was still in the dugout. Then he left the confines of his seat to give Cooper a piece of his mind when he believed he was just protecting his star player.

"Me getting run out of the game was ridiculous," Hinch told reporters after the game. He added he was simply trying to defend Jose Altuve, who he said Cooper was following him to the dugout.

GARVER SPARKS TWINS

Minnesota Twins catcher Mitch Garver went three for five with two doubles and four RBIs in the team's 10-7 win over the Texas Rangers.

Tampa bay Rays starter Tyler Glasnow went pitch for pitch with Corey Kluber on Friday, allowing just one earned run in seven innings. The problem was Kluber gave up zero over seven with eight strikeouts in a 3-0 win for the Cleveland Indians.

ATLANTA'S LEAD REDUCED AS PAIR STRUGGLE

Atlanta Braves first baseman Freddie Freeman and right fielder Nick Markakis went a combined 0 for eight with three strikeouts in a 3-2 loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates. Atlanta's lead in the National League East is now down to two games after Philadelphia Phillies infielder Asdrubal Cabrera hit a walk-off home run against the Chicago Cubs in a 2-1 victory.

UP IN SMOAK AS BLUE JAYS STUN MARLINS

Toronto Blue Jays first baseman Justin Smoak had the night off, but he also got a chance to pinch hit with the bases loaded down 5-2 in the top of the ninth. He made the most of the opportunity. He hit a grand slam to lead his team to a dramatic 6-5 win over the Miami Marlins.

FRIDAY'S RESULTS

New York Yankees 7-5 Detroit Tigers

DIAMONDBACKS AT DODGERS

Every division game matters and Arizona will send out Patrick Corbin (10-5, 3.15 ERA) to take on Clayton Kershaw (6-5, 2.39) in the third game of a four-game set on Saturday.
