Coronavirus: MLBPA rejects latest offer, wants MLB to schedule season

June 14 2020 3:50 AM

The MLB Players Association rejected MLB's latest offer to start the coronavirus-delayed season and said owners should order a return to work, which would likely lead to lengthy litigation.

The league proposed a 72-game season at 80 per cent prorated pay on Friday and gave the union until Sunday to respond. The MLBPA officially rejected the offer a day early.

"It unfortunately appears that further dialogue with the league would be futile," union head Tony Clark said in a statement. "It's time to get back to work. Tell us when and where."

The sides reached an agreement on March 26 that gave commissioner Rob Manfred the ability to schedule a season of any length as long as the players are paid full prorated salaries and there were no travel restrictions. It called for "good faith" negotiations to play in empty ballparks or neutral sites.

MLB believes the agreement allows them to seek another round of pay reductions to account for games being played without fans, something the union has rejected. Players insist they should not have to accept any additional pay cuts.

"In recent day, owners have decried the supposed unprofitability of owning a baseball team and the commissioner has repeatedly threatened to schedule a dramatically shorter season unless players agree to hundreds of millions in further concessions," Clark said.

"Our response has been consistent that such concessions are unwarranted, would be fundamentally unfair to players, and that our sport deserves the fullest 2020 season possible. These remain our positions today, particularly in light of new reports regarding MLB’s national television rights – information we requested from the league weeks ago but were never provided."

Earlier on Saturday, it was reported MLB is finalising a billion-dollar broadcasting deal with Turner Sports for rights starting in 2022, the season after Turner's current contract expires for one League Championship Series and a package of Sunday regular-season broadcasts in the second half.
