Sixers rookie Zhaire Smith has foot surgery

August 10 2018 4:52 PM

Philadelphia 76ers rookie Zhaire Smith underwent successful surgery on a Jones fracture in his left foot, the team announced.

Smith, who was originally selected by the Phoenix Suns with the 16th pick in the 2018 NBA Draft and traded to the Sixers for Mikal Bridges, fractured his foot in Las Vegas during a developmental camp for NBA players on Monday.

Philadelphia are no strangers to injury struggles with rookies. Ben Simmons sat out the entirety of his first season due to a Jones fracture, while Joel Embiid missed his first two years and the 2017 first overall pick Markelle Fultz barely played in his maiden campaign due to a shoulder problem.

A Sixers statement read: "Additional information regarding Smith's recovery and return-to-play timetable will be provided as available when appropriate."

Texas Tech product Smith, who was known as one of the most explosive athletes in the draft, is a lock-down defender and improving offensive talent.
