The Washington Capitals held on for a 3-2 win over the Vegas Golden Knights to level the Stanley Cup Final at 1-1 on Wednesday.
The Capitals grabbed the lead with back-to-back goals in the second period and held on in game two.
Vegas had a chance to tie the score with one minute, 59 seconds to play when winger Alex Tuch had a shot at an open net.
But Washington goalie Braden Holtby made an incredible stick save to deny the Golden Knights.
GOLDEN KNIGHTS CONTINUE TO STRIKE FIRST IN VEGAS
The Golden Knights took an early lead once again in game two.
With just over 12 minutes to play in the first period, Vegas forward James Neal corralled a pass with his stick and skated past Capitals defender Dmitry Orlov. Neal then sent a shot over the shoulder of Holtby and into the top corner of the net to put the Golden Knights ahead 1-0.
Vegas have scored first in all nine of their home playoff games.
Neal's goal was his fifth of the playoffs.
OVECHKIN ON THE BOARD
Alex Ovechkin is one of the best players in the NHL. The 13-year veteran tallied his first career Stanley Cup Final goal on Wednesday.
Ovechkin received a pass from Lars Eller before shooting the puck off Golden Knights goalie Marc-Andre Fleury and into the net. Ovechkin's goal gave the Capitals a 2-1 second-period advantage.
Ovechkin has now scored 13 goals this postseason. He recorded an assist in game one.
CAPITALS KILL CRUCIAL POWER PLAY
Washington held a 3-2 lead with just under 17 minutes to play when forward Tom Wilson was called for an interference penalty. Less than a minute later, Eller was sent to the penalty box for hooking, handing Vegas a five-on-three advantage and a chance to tie the game.
The Golden Knights tallied nine shots during that time but failed to score and the Capitals were still on top at the end of the power play.
Game three between the Golden Knights and Capitals is on Saturday.
