Judge powers Yankees past Red Sox with late home run

May 10 2018 6:37 AM

The New York Yankees took over the top spot in the American League (AL) East on Wednesday, defeating the Boston Red Sox 9-6 at Yankee Stadium.

Down 6-5 entering the eighth inning, the Yankees scored four runs in the bottom of the inning to take control of the game.

Outfielder Brett Gardner gave the Yankees the lead with a triple to deep center field, scoring two runners.

Aaron Judge then concluded his three-hit game by smashing a two-run home run. Judge, batting .308 this season, finished with three runs scored, three RBIs and a walk. He now has nine home runs and 27 RBIs this season.

Hanley Ramirez briefly gave Boston the lead in the seventh inning with a solo home run, his 14th career go-ahead home run in the seventh inning or later. But New York struck last.

Neither starting pitcher – Rick Porcello for the Red Sox nor Masahiro Tanaka for the Yankees – lasted very long or found much success on the night. Porcello allowed five earned runs in 5.1 innings, and Tanaka was pulled after serving up four runs in 5.1 innings. But Yankees closer Aroldis Chapman struck out the side to earn the save.

With the win, the Yankees improved to 26-10. The Red Sox fell to 25-11.
