Germany out despite Finland win

May 13 2018 11:55 PM

Markus Eisenschmid scored an overtime winner but a 3-2 victory over Finland failed to keep Germany's IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship play-off hopes alive.

Sebastian Aho's one-timer with just over two minutes of normal time remaining brought Finland level at 2-2 in a tense encounter in Herning on Sunday.

Eisenschmid settled it two minutes into overtime after being set up by Dominik Kahun, but Germany are unable to progress with just one Group B clash against Canada to come on Tuesday.

Finland will go into their showdown with group leaders United States knowing only a regulation-time win will be good enough to usurp their opponents at the summit.

The USA were far too strong for Norway, Patrick Kane scoring twice in the first period of a 9-3 success at Jyske Bank Boxen.

David Pastrnak also struck twice in the first period as Czech Republic thrashed France 6-0 in Copenhagen.

Defending champions Sweden remain top of the Group A following a 5-3 triumph over Switzerland, Patric Hornqvist scoring in his first game of the tournament.
