Sweden win shoot-out to retain world title

May 20 2018 11:47 PM

Sweden retained their IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship title by coming from behind in a dramatic penalty shoot-out with Switzerland on Sunday.

The two sides were locked at 2-2 after three periods and there was no separating them following overtime in Copenhagen.

Sven Andrighetto held his nerve to put the Swiss, eyeing a first world title, in front with the first shoot-out attempt under immense pressure at the Royal Arena, but goals from Oliver Ekman-Larsson and Filip Forsberg turned it around for the defending champions.

Anders Nilsson saved the final strike from Nino Niederreiter to earn an 11th world title for Sweden and leave Switzerland heartbroken.

Niederreiter had put Switzerland in front, but Gustav Nyquist levelled before the end of the first quarter to peg the two-time runners-up back.

Switzerland led for a second time courtesy of Timo Meier's strike, only for Mika Zibanejad to draw the Swedes level again in the second period and they produced another comeback in the shoot-out to win it.

The United States beat Canada 3-1 earlier in the day to take bronze.
