Astros score go-ahead run against Rangers on ninth-inning balk

June 11 2018 3:24 AM

The Houston Astros scored the go-ahead run against the Texas Rangers on Sunday in unusual fashion.

Houston designated hitter Evan Gattis was at the plate in the top of the ninth with runners on second and third and the score tied at 7-7.

Rangers reliever Keone Kela delivered a ball in the dirt that evened the count at 2-2. Following the pitch, Astros manager AJ Hinch left the dugout to argue that Kela had committed a balk.

The umpires huddled and ruled that Kela had balked, which allowed George Springer to come home from third for the tie-breaking run. Rangers manager Jeff Banister argued the call and was ejected.

Crew chief Sam Holbrook told The Athletic after the game all four umpires saw the balk.

The Astros swept their four-game series against the Rangers and now hold a 42-25 record in 2018.
