Strickland breaks hand punching door after blown save, out for up to eight weeks

June 20 2018 2:30 AM

Hunter Strickland let a blown save get the best of him, and it will cost him dearly.

The San Francisco Giants closer broke his hand punching a door in frustration after coming out of a 5-4 loss to the Miami Marlins on Monday.

Giants manager Bruce Bochy said he will require surgery and will miss six to eight weeks.

Strickland got the hook after giving up three earned runs, on three hits and two walks, and only recording one out. It was his fourth blown save of the season, but second in four days.

"I'm sure he felt fully responsible [for the loss]. He didn't think before it happened," Bochy said (via NBC Sports).

Bochy added he was "disappointed" and "crushed" because he had seen Strickland mature as a person and pitcher.

The 29-year-old right-hander has 13 saves and a 2.84 ERA in his first season as the Giants closer.

With Strickland out, Bochy said he will go with either Tony Watson or Sam Dyson as interim closer.
