NFL Supplemental Draft 2018: Giants take Beal in round three

July 12 2018 1:42 AM

Sam Beal became the first player taken in the NFL Supplemental Draft for three years as the New York Giants selected him in the third round.

Western Michigan cornerback Beal is the highest pick in the Supplemental Draft since Josh Gordon was selected in the second round by the Cleveland Browns in 2012.

The Giants will now forfeit their third-round pick in the 2019 draft.

Virginia Tech corner Adonis Alexander was later selected by the Washington Redskins in the sixth round.

Beal was considered the cream of the crop and had been expected by many to perhaps go as high as the second round. He is a fleet and aggressive defender who is unafraid to rough up receivers when playing press coverage but also has fluid hips, allowing him to easily turn and run with wideouts.

He had 19 pass breakups in his Western Michigan career, though only two interceptions.

Mississippi State safety Brandon Bryant, Oregon State linebacker Bright Ugwoegbu and Grand Valley State running back Martayveus Carter all went undrafted. Bryant is reportedly expected to sign with the New York Jets.
