The New York Yankees almost erased an early four-run deficit against the Cleveland Indians but their comeback came up just short.
Cleveland came away with a 6-5 win over New York at Progressive Field on Friday as the Indians moved to 51-42 for the MLB season, while the Yankees fell to 61-32.
The Indians scored a run in the first inning to take an early lead and then plated three more on doubles by Yan Gomes and Michael Brantley one inning later.
A sacrifice fly by outfielder Brett Gardner cut the Yankees' deficit to 4-3 in the fifth before Cleveland tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the frame.
Gardner drove in another run in the eighth and Giancarlo Stanton blasted a home run in the ninth to make the score 6-5.
But Indians reliever Cody Allen induced a double play and forced Didi Gregorius into a groundout to secure the win.
Michael Brantley and Jose Ramirez each tallied two RBIs for Cleveland. Yankees Greg Bird and Tyler Wade both picked up a pair of hits.
Meanwhile, the Boston Red Sox and their 10-game winning streak came to a halt in a 13-7 defeat against the Toronto Blue Jays.
SYNDERGAARD INSPIRES METS
New York Mets star Noah Syndergaard allowed just one run in five innings against the Washington Nationals in his return from the disabled list. He also drove in a run at the plate in a 4-2 victory.
Jake Arrieta threw seven scoreless innings in the Philadelphia Phillies' 2-0 win over the Miami Marlins.
EOVALDI STRUGGLES AGAINST TWINS
Tampa Bay Rays starter Nathan Eovaldi allowed nine hits and eight runs in 2.3 innings on the mound against the Minnesota Twins, who won 11-8.
Christian Yelich and Jesus Aguilar, the Milwaukee Brewers' three and four hitters, combined to go 0 for eight with four strikeouts in a 7-3 loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates.

NATIONALS AT METS
Washington will look to move over .500 when they face the Mets at Citi Field. Austin Voth is set to make his MLB debut on Saturday when he starts for the Nationals while Zack Wheeler will take the mound for the Mets. Wheeler (2-6, 4.42 ERA) has reportedly drawn interest from multiple teams ahead of the July 31 non-waiver trade deadline.
