Red Sox place ace Sale on DL with left shoulder inflammation

August 1 2018 1:01 AM

Boston Red Sox pitcher Chris Sale is heading to the disabled list with shoulder inflammation.

The Red Sox placed seven-time MLB All-Star Sale on the 10-day DL due to mild left shoulder inflammation, Boston announced on Tuesday.

Sale reportedly told Red Sox president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski he plans to return for his scheduled start against the Toronto Blue Jays next week.

The 29-year-old has been one of the best pitchers in baseball this season. He has tallied an 11-4 record and a 2.04 ERA in 22 starts.

Sale spent his first seven seasons with the Chicago White Sox before he was traded to Boston in December 2016. He has made the last seven All-Star teams.

The Red Sox recalled pitcher Brandon Workman from Triple-A Pawtucket to take Sale's place on the active roster.

Boston entered play on Tuesday with an MLB-best 75-33 record.
