Leonard breaks silence to thank Spurs and Popovich

August 9 2018 4:47 PM

Kawhi Leonard has written a letter to the San Antonio Spurs, thanking the fans, his former team-mates and coach Gregg Popovich for their support.

Leonard was traded to the Toronto Raptors in mid-July, having reportedly asked to leave San Antonio after seven years that included an NBA championship in 2014.

The 27-year-old initially kept quiet following the move, but he has broken his silence and submitted a letter to the San Antonio Express-News to show his gratitude to the Spurs.

"I have been going back and forth the last few weeks trying to figure out the right things to say," Leonard wrote. "And it comes down to two simple words: THANK YOU!

"My family and I want to say THANK YOU to the entire Spurs organisation and the people and fans of San Antonio."

To coach Popovich, Leonard added: "Pop, I'll always be grateful for my growth under your guidance."

He concluded: "While I’m looking forward to the next chapter in my career, I'll always remember the city and the people of San Antonio!"
