Royals´ Lopez flirts with perfect game

September 9 2018 5:19 AM

Kansas City Royals starting pitcher Jorge Lopez flirted with the 24th perfect game in MLB history when he recorded 24 straight outs in a 4-1 win over the Minnesota Twins.

Lopez, who was acquired from the Milwaukee Brewers as part of the Mike Moustakas trade in July, took a perfect game into the ninth inning but promptly allowed a walk and a hit to end the threat of the first perfect game since Felix Hernandez in 2012.

With the Royals well out of postseason contention, Lopez threatened to give their fan base something to cheer about. But he ultimately finished the game with one run allowed with four strikeouts in eight innings on Saturday.

Had Lopez finished the perfect game, he likely would have been the biggest surprise to pull off the feat since Chicago White Sox starter Philip Humber in 2012.

Still, the 25-year-old hurler looks poised for a bright future after displaying excellent command against Minnesota.
