Rams and Chiefs remain undefeated, Gano slays Giants from long range

October 8 2018 6:13 AM

The Los Angeles Rams and Kansas City Chiefs have been the class of the NFL this season, but the last two undefeated teams faced stiff tests on Sunday.

Both teams were up to the challenge to move to 5-0. The Chiefs easily dispatched the formidable Jacksonville Jaguars 30-14 thanks to a strong game from quarterback Patrick Mahomes (313 yards passing, one rushing score).

The Rams sweated out a 33-31 win over the Seattle Seahawks before a hostile crowd at CenturyLink Field. Todd Gurley scored three touchdowns and had 113 total yards.

While the surprising Cincinnati Bengals are not undefeated, they are the only 4-1 team in the NFL after the week-five results, as they erupted for 27 points in the second half to top the Miami Dolphins 27-17.

Elsewhere, kickers decided games in the most dramatic fashion — both good and bad. Graham Gano nailed a 63-yard field goal — tied for the second-longest kick in NFL history — with a second remaining to help the Carolina Panthers stave off an upset bid by the New York Giants 33-31.

In Detroit, Green Bay kicker Mason Crosby had a nightmarish day, missing four of five field goals and his only extra-point attempt, leaving 13 potential points on the table. The Packers lost 31-23 to the Lions.

Cleveland Browns rookie Greg Joseph kicked a hooking 37-yard shot that barely cleared the crossbar at the end of overtime to help top the Baltimore Ravens 12-9 and even their record at 2-2-1.

Finally, Houston Texans kicker Ka'imi Fairbairn hit a 36-yard field goal in overtime in a 19-16 win over the Dallas Cowboys.

Injury report

Rams receivers Cooper Kupp and Brandin Cooks left with concussions in the first half of their game against the Seahawks.

San Francisco 49ers running back Matt Breida sprained his left ankle in the first quarter against the Arizona Cardinals and did not return.

Jaguars running back Corey Grant suffered a potentially season-ending foot injury against the Chiefs.

Denver Broncos cornerback Adam Jones suffered a leg injury and was ruled out for the second half against the New York Jets.

Chiefs guard Laurent Duvernay-Tardif suffered a fractured left fibula, but is expected to return this season, head coach Andy Reid said.

Lions running back running back Kerryon Johnson left in the fourth quarter with an apparent ankle injury.

Dolphins left tackle Laremy Tunsil left the Bengals game with a concussion.

Tennessee Titans left tackle Taylor Lewan hurt his foot in the second quarter and did not return.

By the numbers

Adam Thielen had seven catches for 116 yards against Super Bowl champions the Philadelphia Eagles, becoming the first player in the Super Bowl era to have 100 or more receiving yards in each of his team's first five games.

Isaiah Crowell rushed for 219 yards to set a Jets record.

Steelers running back James Conner had 44 yards from scrimmage last week, but exploded for 72 scrimmage yards and a score on Pittsburgh's opening drive against the Falcons. He finished the team's win with 110 rushing yards, 75 receiving yards and two scores.

Quotables

"I thought we were punting. I went back on the field to talk to one of the officials about something and as I turn around the offense is running on the field, and I went, 'All right, I guess we're going for it.'"

— Rams quarterback Jared Goff, who said he did not know coach Sean McVay had decided to go for it on fourth and short late in the fourth quarter. Goff's QB sneak picked up the first down and clinched the win over Seattle.

"You are becoming something special. I'm telling you. If you guys will keep working, and do what we [coaches] are asking you to do, great things will happen."

— Browns head coach Hue Jackson, in his locker room pep talk after the Browns' victory over the Ravens.
