Shohei Ohtani to undergo knee surgery, will end season early

September 13 2019 12:08 AM

Shohei Ohtani's season ended earlier than expected on Thursday, with the Los Angeles Angels announcing he is to undergo knee surgery.

The operation, scheduled for Friday, will address a bipartite patella in Ohtani's left knee, general manager Billy Eppler confirmed.

Ohtani has been hampered with injuries; the 25-year-old is still recovering from Tommy John surgery he underwent in October 2018 and has been unable to pitch in 2019.

"A general timetable for this procedure is 8-12 weeks for full recovery," Eppler said. "We will update with more information following the procedure."

The news comes days after Ohtani had a career game at the plate, driving in a career-best five RBIs in the Angels' 8-7 win over the Chicago White Sox last weekend.

He will finish the campaign with a .286/.343/.505 stat line, hitting 18 home runs and 62 RBIs.

As a pitcher, Ohtani, posted a 4-2 mark with a 3.31 ERA and 1.16 WHIP in his first MLB season last year. If all goes well with his recovery, he will be back in the Angels' rotation in 2020.
