Coronavirus: Miami Marlins delay trip home amid COVID-19 fears

July 27 2020 5:23 AM

The Miami Marlins have delayed their return home amid fears of a coronavirus outbreak within the MLB team.

Miami claimed a 2-1 series win away to the Philadelphia Phillies following Sunday's 11-6 victory at Citizens Bank Park.

However, the Marlins postponed their post-game trip back to Miami following reports of positive COVID-19 tests.

Marlins starter Jose Urena – who was scheduled to face the Phillies on Sunday before being scratched just hours before the game without reason – reportedly contracted coronavirus, along with three team-mates.

"The guys that tested positive are quarantined here in Philly,'' said Marlins manager Don Mattingly, whose team will fly out to Miami on Monday.

The 2020 MLB season finally got underway on July 23, having initially been scheduled to start in March prior to the COVID-19 outbreak.

Due to the coronavirus-enforced break and crisis, the campaign will only consist of 60 regular-season games and an expanded postseason.

"We were more comfortable flying as a group later," Mattingly added. "We're talking about these guys traveling back home to their families and their kids, and it's the reason we want to be safe.

"It's fair to say guys are concerned about things. They want how they're feeling about the situation to be heard. I think it's fair. We're talking about health."

Meanwhile, the Cincinnati Reds placed Mike Moustakas on the injured list after the three-time All-Star felt sick prior to Sunday's 3-2 loss to the Detroit Tigers.

It comes after Reds team-mate Matt Davidson returned a positive test on Saturday, having started as a designated hitter on Opening Day Friday.

"He woke up not feeling well," Reds manager David Bell. "That's all we know at this point, so we're hopeful that it's nothing. As you can imagine, we're just very hopeful that it's nothing and he'll be back … Just to be really cautious.

"Hopefully, we're just being overly cautious. That's what we have to do, and that's part of being a great team-mate at this point, is if there is any doubt, we have to stay home."
